How we came to be...

Who am I?

I know the difficulties and challenges faced from my own personal experience. It is an issue very close to my heart and has been a passionate labour of love and project of mine for some time. I was bullied at school where my additional needs were not met or recognised so I fell behind. I had low self-esteem so got involved with the wrong crowd with dangerous, bad influences around me and self-harming behaviours started. I mirrored and imitated others due to a lack of self-worth and feeling like I had nowhere to fit in. Bad grades left me feeling worthless and with no direction.

It was not until I left school that I embarked upon a more visual, practical and alternative style of education. I gained several qualifications and embarked on a pathway of self-development.

Why I care?

My own path and struggles have given me insight into how hard things can be. When your individual needs are overlooked in the school system you are left behind to feel like a failure. Bullying, ineffective systems and hidden disabilities can leave you feeling lonely, frustrated, worthless, hurt and vulnerable to falling in with the wrong crowd. My teenage years were not happy ones. I made a pact that I would never forget and to support other people in the same situation.

When a member of my own family received a diagnosis of autism / ASD and learning about it all started to make sense. By walking a healing path of honesty, forgiveness and accountability, whilst taking better self-care and practising self-compassion.  I started a process of gaining a meaningful education to me and investing in all my forgotten passions and hobbies. Then life got much better and I understood my true worth. I now want to help others in the same situation.

My Experience

My experience as a Supervisor at Camphill Community Cafe working with adults who had a range of special needs gave me excellent experience in a wonderful environment surrounded by lovely people.

I'd also spent two years of school service supporting a special needs school in my free periods throughout my A levels looking after children from nursery right through to school leaver age. Supporting artwork in the classroom, helping them prepare for the school play 'The King and I' and giving peer support in the playground.

I assisted at a local playgroup for two years and also at a local youth club for a short period of time, giving me invaluable experience and insight. My work experience was gained in Forest Nursery School.

I gained food service and customer service skills in the John Lewis Partnership working for Waitrose before embarking on more community and voluntary work through Barnardos Support for Parents where I gained four years of experience and trained in safeguarding, health and safety, equal opportunities and a Solihull Training course. I worked with Age UK preparing and presenting Gentle Chair Exercise classes. Prior to that, I had almost ten years in a career in Human Resources and Recruitment where I trained in all aspects of employee relations.

How we will help...

It is our aim to provide training courses and events for children and young people with special educational or additional needs, those on the autistic spectrum, those with mental health or suffering bullying/ostracising issues.

We will do this by creating a kind, supportive and inspiring place to learn, using art, crafts and nature for creativity and expression. Using different media to help explore senses and as a means to communicate and make sense of the world.

My Love of Nature

Nature has been a great healer for me after a lot of life traumas and wrong turns in my youth. I re-established a connection back to nature and a love of the great outdoors. After passing my Scuba Diving PADI qualifications, I started to witness first-hand and understand the damage we are doing to Mother Nature. In my healing journey, I began to clean up my own habits from lacking a mindful connection between what I was doing from the pain I was harbouring. Cleaning up my act became very important to me and to make amends for my ways.

It filled me with a great sense of sadness and determination to help others on a similar path to heal and change. I am still learning and growing all the time. Trying to rectify karma for all the missteps when I was sleepwalking through life. My husband and I often find litter picking is like treasure hunting now! It gives a great sense of satisfaction to help the planet that gives us so much.

At the moment we are completely self funded, but hope to set up as a charitable group in order to gain much needed funding for future projects
